This document summarizes the proceedings from the Pembina Institute's Carbon Pricing for a Sustainable Economy conference, held in Calgary in October 2007.

The conference brought together a wide range of experts and practitioners for an intensive workshop with the goals of (a) highlighting and sharing cutting-edge thinking on carbon pricing tools, and (b) vetting and refining concrete design proposals that could form the basis for future policy.

About one hundred participants from a broad range of industry, government, ENGO, media and academic sectors took part, bringing their expertise as professionals, interests as stakeholders and problem-solving skills to the table.

The Delegates Package, including pre-conference readings, is also available.

Nuclear Power in Canada: An Examination of Risks, Impacts and Sustainability

This study examines the environmental impacts of the use of nuclear energy for electricity generation in Canada through each of the four major stages of nuclear energy production: uranium mining and milling; uranium refining, conversion and fuel fabrication; nuclear power plant operation; and waste fuel management. It is intended to inform public debate over the future role of nuclear energy in Canada, and to facilitate comparisons of nuclear energy with other potential energy sources.

This report, commissioned by the Climate Action Network Canada, identifies and quantifies federal government expenditure on Canada's oil and gas sector. It also investigates both federal and provincial support for oil sands developments. The study reveals increasing expenditure over the 1996 to 2002 period-a major concern in light of Canada's Kyoto commitment.
